An interesting and entertaining album.

With a name like Headless, I was sort of hoping this album would be that bad so I could use adjectives like 'mindless' and 'soulless', but in fact nothing could be further from the truth. Headless were formed in the late nineties by (then) young Italian guitarists Walter Cianciusi and Dario Parente, releasing an EP and an album, but then disbanding in 2000. They reunited in 2011 and began writing the songs that would eventually become 'Growing Apart'.

Needing reinforcements, the guitarists set about finding a singer and a drummer, and credit where it's due, they have managed to pull off a bit of a coup. Joining the band on vocals is the much-travelled Göran Edman (Brazen Abbot, Yngwie Malmsteen etc. and most recently Covered Call), and special guest in the rhythm department is Queensrÿche's Scott Rockenfield.

Musically, it's best described as "hard rock meets heavy metal with a progressive edge". Rockenfield delivers technically precise yet non-flashy drum patterns, solid and occasionally intricate, which lay the foundations for Cianciusi and Parente to riff and shred to their hearts content, with some infrequent unexpected and slightly unusual interludes, while Edman's highly melodic vocal lines bring the whole thing together to make it enormously listenable, with some cleverly conceived harmony parts on the likes of 'Primetime', 'Nero Fantasies', 'Calf Love' and 'Growing Apart'.

'God Of Sorrow And Grief' gets things off to a rip-roaring start with a snappy double-time rhythm, and halfway through the album 'Be Myself' is a similarly fast-paced number with a part-processed and part-shouted vocal from Edman, a kind of Nu-Metal and Thrash hybrid that the singer manages to pull off extremely well, and though it may put some people off it adds a touch of eclecticism to the proceedings.

On a similar note, the album closes on a serene acoustic note with a version of The Rolling Stones/Marianne Faithfull hit 'As Tears Go By', perfectly executed and yet somewhat at odds with the rest of the material on offer, but this doesn't detract from what is an interesting and entertaining album.
