When it’s on song it’s off the chart.

Embarrassment of Riches, Entry 73. There are some who think that deprivation is relative; in fact the leonine-haired Professor AC Grayling seems to have advanced a similar theory recently; simplified it’s that if you have no clean water or roof over your head, you would be happy with the water and a shack, whereas if you had mod cons, having the TV and car removed might be deprivation. And you may have a million in the bank but live a frugal life which is enough for you; so what is "enough"? And what is enough in music; will a genre swamped with brilliance eventually become a bore? If so, the souped up Band style of The Temperance Movement, The Sheepdogs, Buffalo Summer has a new unwelcome arrival sucking their air.

This is an interesting collection; vocalist Jon Stevens of Australian INXSalike Noiseworks and David Lowy on guitars, helped Richard Fortus and Dizzy Reed (Cult, G’n’R respectively), who have set up behind their dad’s Subaru and clattered about with vim and verve on ‘It’s Gonna Take Time’ (but not much) which even slows for some Southern sourmash, but then hooks up to the Blues, with single ‘Lock ‘N’ Load’ electrifies it and almost narrates whilst Slash’s solo meanders sexily. Twice.

By the time we get to ‘Writing On The Wall’, the Faces are slouching in the corner, with Stevens sounding uncannily like Rod Stewart but aspiring to Classic Rock and even AOR. And it had to happen, ‘Tomorrow’ is slight, super and folkish Zep-like in its tough moments, but also Zep-like in its airy, open moments.

It isn’t all stunning, some of it’s a bit obvious, but when it’s on song it’s off the chart. Another addition to a crowded marketplace, these Daisies aren’t quite in full bloom yet, but are not curled and drooping either.
