This level of quality so far into a career is like gold dust.

The rock and metal world held its collective breath this summer when it was announced Motorhead leader Lemmy had been taken ill during a concert and had to take the drastic action to cancel several live shows in order to recover. For a man who lives on cigarettes and alcohol this was a serious situation indeed.

For those on the periphery of the rock and roll life there were whispers of ‘old man gets ill, misses work’ delivered with a shrug. But for those of us in the know, the thought of losing Lemmy is a nightmare. And why is that? One listen to Motorhead’s brand new album ‘Aftershock’ is proof that even after 38 years in the same band Lemmy is still as talented and powerful as ever.

Proof there’s life in the old dog yet comes from the opening electric leap of ‘Heartbreaker’; this hound is humping everything in sight. The unstoppable ‘Coup De Grace’ races on a flying guitar riff, while ‘Queen Of The Damned’ could strip paint off walls with its power and fire. ‘Lost Woman Blues’, a slower cut, slips on like a warm glove; it’s a perfect fit of slow, bluesy guitar jam and Lemmy’s rough, smoky voice. But as good as Lemmy is, ‘Aftershock’ belongs to guitarist Phil Campbell. His mixture of electrifying hard rock and tender blues encompasses both the young, bollocks-to-it-all attitude of the early days to the grizzled, hard lived lament of the present and future.

‘Aftershock’ is Motorhead’s 21st studio album. This level of quality so far into a career is like gold dust. Maybe it says a lot that Lemmy has never changed or pandered; he has stayed true to himself and his fans and like the old saying goes: the truth will always out.

Motorhead is not a nostalgia act. This old man is still relevant.
