The self described “bitch” is almost certainly back and she’s sounding as good as ever.

I consider Lita Ford, (along with Doro and Vixen) a pioneer of the female fronted genre that I love so much.  So I was a rather happy chappy to have the chance to review her latest live release.

Some of our younger readers may not be that familiar with Ford, whose career started in 1975 aged sixteen with The Runaways.  After they broke up in 1979 she went solo and released six albums between 1983 and 1995 including the US Platinum Awarded ‘Lita’ and my personal favourite ‘Dangerous Curves’.  She then left the industry for fifteen years, (although there was a ‘Greatest Hits Live’ and ‘Best Of’ in 1999 & 2004), before returning in 2009 with the alternative sounding ‘Wicked Wonderland’ and the more traditional Ford like ‘Living Like A Runaway’ in 2012.  She’s back again in 2013 with another live album entitled ‘The Bitch Is Back...Live’.  It’s been so long since I last listened to Ford that I’d actually forgotten what a distinctive voice she has; just a few songs in I sat back and marvelled at how instantly recognisable she still sounds.  There’s also that deep unmistakable BC Rich guitar that’s also been a hallmark of her career.  ‘Bitch…’ consists of twelve tracks that unsurprisingly cover the majority of her solo career.  There are five songs from her latest record with choices like ‘Hate’, ‘Living Like a Runaway’ and ‘The Bitch Is Back’.  The remaining seven songs are selected from her 80s/90s heyday with the likes of ‘Back To The Cave’, ‘Can’t Catch Me’ and ‘Close My Eyes Forever’ as well as ‘Out For Blood’ and ‘Hungry’.  The latter is one of my highlights along with the closer, (and her signature song), ‘Kiss Me Deadly’.

As live albums go this one is a bit of a barnstormer and I enjoyed it immensely, the old songs still sound great and the new tracks slide in seamlessly next to them.  ‘Bitch…’ is not only a grand live album with some exceedingly groovy songs but it’s a lot of fun as well with several witty and honest comments between songs that made me chuckle.  Ford still has that throaty voice and it seems the passing years have hardly diminished her vocal ability.  This isn’t the most polished live album I’ve heard but that in itself is a rather old school trait.  The technical side has a raw and natural feel and that only adds to the album’s charm. To me this is what live albums are all about and it’s one I highly recommend to female fronted and retro Heavy Rock fans alike.  The self described “bitch” is almost certainly back and she’s sounding as good as ever.
