The awesome Primal Fear metal machine at its bombastic best!

The de-facto heirs to the riff fuelled metallic crown fashioned for the mighty Judas Priest, it’s hard to believe that Primal Fear have been kicking up a sonic firestorm for more than 15 years now – indeed, along perhaps with HammerFall and maybe Iron Savior they were largely responsible for kick-starting traditional metal’s upsurge in fortunes across continental Europe back then.

Initially seen as a rescue project put together by Sinner bassist Mat Sinner as a way of keeping former Gamma Ray frontman Ralf Scheepers in the business (disillusioned at losing out to Ripper Owens, he was on the verge of quitting altogether), Primal Fear quickly grew into so much more, in the process becoming the primary focus of all involved. Establishing their own vitriolic trademark sound pretty much from the get go – all kerosene fuelled riffs and sky skimming vocals – over the years they’ve grown immeasurably in stature, their frightening consistent song-writing abilities producing a string of classic albums such as ‘Nuclear Fire’ and ‘Black Sun’.

Since signing with Frontiers for 2007’s ‘New Religion’ opus, their rabid arsenal of riffs has been complemented and expanded with a smattering of ever more divergent moods and tempos (which reached its zenith with ’16.6 (Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead)’. 2012’s firebrand ‘Unbreakable’ was in some respects a full circle rediscovery of their roots (albeit delivered in a classy and sophisticated way), and the aptly named ‘Delivering The Black’ sees them continue in a similar vein… only with an even sharper set of songs!

As rampant opener ‘King For A Day’ explodes in your face you’re instantly transported back to the ‘Nuclear Fire’ days (the best of early Primal Fear in my opinion), galloping rhythms and scything riffs flaying the skin off your face! Musically speaking this album has a plethora of full throttle tracks – ‘Road To Asylum’, ‘Rebel Faction’ and ‘Delivering The Black’ to name but three – and whilst tempo wise they’re all similar, there’s an inspiring melodic sensibility a la Sinner that ensures they all sound fresh and different to one another (something that Primal Fear have never utilised to this extent in the past).

Of course, there are a couple of oases which offer respite from the intense wall of sound presented by the album as a whole, a pair of stunning epics in the shape of the mid paced ‘One Night In December’ and the awesome slow burner ‘When Death Comes Knocking’ which really show the awesome Primal Fear metal machine at its bombastic best!

The juggernaut trundles on crushing everything in its path – long live Primal Fear!
