Explosive comeback from one of the best neo-classically infused combos ever!

As a massive Rainbow fan for more years than I care to remember now, its always perplexed me somewhat as to why the transitional period between the classic Dio sound and the svelte Joe Lynn Turner era is continually overlooked.

Ok, on paper at least the lounge suited Graham Bonnet was a bit of an odd fit for a rock band to say the least, but you cant deny he had one hell of a voice and Down To Earth, the sole album he recorded with them, is perhaps second only to the gargantuan Rising in my book. The slightly more commercial yet stoically neo-classical direction the band were heading in at that time intrigued me no end, and when Ring Of Fire picked up a similar mantle more than two decades later, we at last got a taste of what Blackmore and Co. may have achieved had they chosen to continue in that vein.

Granted, there was a fair dose of OTT Malmsteen involved (not to mention keyboards with an almost Machiavellian sense of melodrama), but they were about the closest you could get to Bonnet era Rainbow in the post Alcatrazz age. Something of a supergroup project, Ring Of Fire released three excellent studio albums between 2001 and 2004, each one imbued with passion, drenched in emotional melody lines and proudly displaying the kind of grandiloquent hooks usually the preserve of classical composers. Now, some nine years or so after their Lapse Of Reality album the creative core of the band vocalist Mark Boals, guitarist Tony MacAlpine and keyboard maestro Vitalij Kuprij have regrouped under the Ring Of Fire banner to continue their illustrious legacy.

Taking inspiration from the infamous Second World War siege which ultimately saw Russian resolve and determination triumph over overwhelming Nazi might, Battle Of Leningrad is a musically enthralling, lyrically compelling conceptual tome which not only picks up from where Ring Of Fire left off, but actually takes them up several levels. Imagine the technical dexterity of Malmsteen, the bombastic magnificence of Royal Hunt and the gravitas of Rainbow all rolled into one mouth-watering package, and youll begin to get a feel for tracks such as the remorseless Battle Of Leningrad, the kaleidoscopic Firewind or the bombastic Mother Russia. Boals sounds on fine form personally speaking, Ring Of Fire always seemed the best fit for his voice for me whilst both MacAlpine and Kurpij trade ever more complex licks in a roaring cacophony of sound.

A truly explosive comeback from one of the best neo-classically infused combos ever!
