An album that oozes class, charm and confidence.

It is no co-incidence that The Temperance Movement are signed to Earache, a label they share with Californian rock and roll revivalists’ Rival Sons. Not unlike their label mates from across the pond they are a band that celebrates all things vintage whilst at the same time dragging the past into the twenty first century with stellar results. They may be being touted as relative newcomers and are a sure-fire bet to be showered with ‘best new band of 2013’ come awards season, but the quintet have paid their dues. Take the case of Glaswegian frontman Phil Campbell who a decade or so ago was at the helm of White Buffalo, a name that will be familiar to Marillion fans for having supported the prog stalwarts on a number of occasions, and who were another victim of the vagaries of record company politics.

From the assured opening of retro-rocker ‘Only Friend’ to the sensual, smouldering blues of closing number ‘Serenity’ this is an album that oozes class, charm and confidence. Campbell evokes the spirit of Steve Marriott married with the heart of Joe Cocker with his frazzled, throaty drawl set against the backdrop of blues-rock Americana played as only three Englishman and an Australian can. The guitar duo of Luke Potashnick and Paul Sayer trade laid-back licks as if they been playing together for as long as Keef and Ron, evident on the uplifting groove of ‘Ain’t No Telling’ and the fragile yet stunning ‘Chinese Lanterns’. The funky, soulful and vibrant ‘Know For Sure’ is as close as bassist Nick Fyffe comes to revisiting his former employment with Jamiroquai and ‘Midnight Black’ ramps up the energy levels with explosive results.

Available in different colored double vinyl editions and even on cassette it doesn’t get more nostalgic than this. Taking the past and making it relevant is no easy task and as this is the last Fireworks issue of the year I’ll take the opportunity to nail my colors firmly to the mast and declare ‘The Temperance Movement’ as far and away my favorite album of 2013.
