Black Star Riders - Marshall Theatre, Milton Keynes (UK) - 30th May 2013

Born out of the ashes of Thin Lizzy, this was Black Star Riders' debut show in support of new album 'All Hell Breaks Loose'. Kicking off with the title-track, vocalist and guitarist Ricky Warwick, kitted out in shades and cowboy hat, is all snarls and attitude – clearly not having to play under the Thin Lizzy moniker has given the man a sense of ease and individual identity on stage.

It's apparent that many in the audience already know the words to the new material, and this brings a smile to guitarist Scott Gorham's face. Without catching a breath, both 'Jailbreak' and 'Waiting For An Alibi' are delivered in classically fine fashion. In my opinion, these are far superior versions compared with those from the John Sykes-led version of Thin Lizzy. The wonderful 'Hey Judas' and 'Before The War' has Ricky Warwick spitting out some of his best lyrics from the new release, while stomping around the stage. 'Kingdom of the Lost' and 'Valley of The Stones' flow beautifully into 'Emerald', where upon guitarists Damon Johnson and Scott Gorham supply twin lead breaks that are air guitar heaven.

Bass player Marc Mendoza and drummer Jimmy Degrasso deliver a tight rhythm section, best displayed during 'Bound For Glory' - a song that deserves to be a future encore in the making. Clearly the band looks happy to finally release their new material, with Ricky passionately explaining that "He wants the band to have a long future, and tour forever." However, it's back to familiar Thin Lizzy territory with 'Cowboy Song', and immortal classic 'The Boys Are Back In Town', with the latter being unleashed upon us before the band leave the stage in a blaze of glory!

With the crowd chanting 'Black Star Riders', the guys return to the stage, looking overwhelmed by the hot reception, offering thanks before playing the mysterious 'Hoodoo Voodoo'. Finishing off with a boisterous 'Rosalie', they bid us goodnight, with what looks like a very bright future ahead of them.

  • SeaDog57 : just an observation. I just got Issue 89 at the Bookstore and when i looked at the spine of the magazine it says "Fireworks Issue 85 Winter Jan - Mar 2019" Was this a misprint? The rest of the Magazine is Issue 89. Was just wondering did anyone else notice this?
