Iron Maiden - O2 Arena, London (UK) - 3rd August 2013

Over the years Iron Maiden tours not only have massive stage shows but also grossed enough money to fill a reservoir each time. The Irons have recently been touring again, this time to commemorate the 25th anniversary of their highly regarded 'Maiden England' performance with two shows at the O2 the last leg of the European Tour. Sadly due to re-entry issues I can't tell you what the openers Voodoo Six were like but I can say that by the time Maiden were due you could literally feel the anticipation.

As the recorded intro 'Doctor Doctor' finished, there was a huge pyrotechnic explosion and out came Maiden with 'Moonchild'. Without missing a beat they sprinted through 'Can I Play With Madness', 'The Prisoner' and 'Afraid To Shoot Strangers'. Bruce Dickinson then appeared in a historic red army tunic waving the Union Jack as the guitarists galloped through 'The Trooper'. Steve Harris's thick bass notes filled the auditorium during 'The Number Of The Beast' whilst pyrotechnic flames shot up from the stage front. The flames continued during 'Phantom Of The Opera' whilst the guitarists swapped positions as Dickinson directed the "heys". The crowd participation continued during 'Run To The Hills', including a huge cheer for a US Civil War dressed Eddie, before one of the night's highlights, 'Wasted Years'.

The dry ice wafted effectively across the stage during 'Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son' as the guitarists spun round and Eddie's eyes lit up bright red in the backdrop. The crowd were back to fever pitch for 'The Clairvoyant' and 'Fear Of The Dark' of which the latter was another of the night's highlights. At this point four statues appeared along the top with the stage bathed in blue giving a very icy effect throughout the main set closer 'Iron Maiden'. During the frenzied solo there was a giant 'Seventh Son' Eddie model that appeared from under the stage to great cheers. After the break the dulcet tones of Winston Churchill hummed around before IM returned for 'Aces High'. There were loads of pyrotechnics and shooting flames that continued into 'The Evil That Men Do' which saw the crowd in good voice. The night finished with an extended 'Running Free' which featured introductions for each member. The repeating chorus was sung with real vigour by the crowd as the show ended.

Tonight was a fabulous night of classic songs, a couple I have never heard before in four previous shows. The stage display was as impressive as expected and IM played every minute like it was their last. Dickinson should be sponsored by Duracell as he never stops and I continue to be a huge fan of the three guitar look with each axe man playing brilliantly. This was all built on the faultless, exhausting rhythms from Harris and Nicko McBrain. Maiden were simply fantastic and tonight was another example of why they are so highly regarded when it comes to live gigs; a reputation that is entirely deserved.
