I Am I / The Wild Lies / Metaprism - Sound Circus, Bournemouth (UK) - 13th September 2013

The Sound Circus Rock club is pretty much an institution in Bournemouth these days as it's seen the demise of all the other live Rock venues and clubs and, along with the relatively new Anvil Rock bar, is one of only two Rock clubs left catering for live music covering the Bournemouth area. But despite these two venues and a handful of pubs, there are still a number of local Rock and Metal bands plying their trade.

Metaprism are one such band, but they hit the stage to a less than packed venue. Guitarist Ollie Roberts utilises female vocalist Theresa Smith from Silent Prophecy to counteract the aggressive growls of Jut Tabor as the tight progressive compositions create a wall of sound in the confined, narrow venue. They run through five songs including 'Even The Lights' and 'Lost In The Dark' from their debut EP to a rabid response from the front few rows that warms the audience up nicely.

After a delay, The Wild Lies appear. They have created a mini buzz when word spreads that Iron Maiden's Adrian Smith's son Dylan is in the band (on bass). Not being familiar with their material I had an open mind as to what to expect but as soon as they got into their stride I had a smile on my face. Sons of famous musicians have a tendency to go very left field so as to distance themselves from any comparisons, but Dylan, along with vocalist Matt Polley (the sole remaining founders) have a very distinct groove going on and numerous changes in tempo and time signatures with galloping bass lines that have that characteristic Iron Maiden stamp all over it. As it happens, being an unknown quantity, the crowd didn't immediately warm to them, and unfortunately, with the three new additions, Zak Muller on lead guitar, Andre Ruffell on rhythm guitar, and Tom Miles on drums, they plan to alter their sound and move into a new, heavier direction (read modern?) which is a shame. With the groove laden 'Heartbreaker', heavy standard Rocker 'Stone Cold Love', the heavy groove and quirky time signature changes of 'Falling', the multiple time changes of the aggressively heavy 'Angels' and the Iron Maiden influenced 'Relive The Ride' with galloping bass lines, The Wild Lies have plenty of good songs to get noticed and build a substantial fan base.

I Am I come with quite a heavyweight reputation being formed by ex Dragonforce singer ZP Theart. It was immediately obvious that the sound was too loud for the venue, the bass and drums thundering through the speakers and drowning out the guitars of Jacob Ziemba and ex-Power Quest member Andy Midgley. ZP Theart also had microphone problems for the first two numbers, but it didn't dampen the bands energy or enthusiasm. Playing for an hour they steam through all but one song from their debut album 'Event Horizon', only missing out 'King In Ruins', but covering Chris Thompson's co-write 'You're The Voice' made internationally famous by John Farnham as first encore. It's obvious the SC stage is too small for a band of this calibre but the crowd's enthusiasm rubs off on the guys.

Theart patrols the stage with ease, eliciting plenty of warm feedback from the audience, whilst Jacob and Andy indulge in plenty of fretboard wizardry with melodic solos and crunching riffs, occasionally throwing shapes, although certainly not running around in the manner of Dragonforce's Herman Li and Sam Totman as the space is fairly limited. But before you know it, it is all over as the venue's curfew cuts in and brings to a close a thoroughly entertaining evening. A few gremlins aside ZP Theart tells me that this has been the best crowd response of all the recent performances I AM I have indulged in and he looks forward to coming back. Well, if he does come back to Bournemouth, I doubt it will be at the Sound Circus as I expect the band to have outgrown the venue if tonight's performance and the quality of the new album is anything to go by.
