Over the past few decades the excellent Guitar World magazine has featured a column called 'Dear Guitar Hero', a simple but effective idea that lets readers send in questions for the world's most popular guitarists to answer. This is a compilation of some of those Q & A sessions and features a good selection of over fifty guitarists from the last five decades, with hardly any well-known ones left out, although I'm sure those readers who fully understand the instrument will question whether some of the guitarists involved deserve the title. As the magazine is a US publication the selections reflect that, even so I'm baffled by a book that includes the likes of Chrissie Hynde, Mike Ness of Social Distortion and Ian MacKaye of Fugazi, but not Allan Holdsworth, Eddie Van Halen or Pat Metheny.

It's a small, easily digestible paperback that you can dip into when you have a spare couple of minutes, with most entries being between two and four pages and with questions ranging from the extremely technical to the most mundane. It's obvious some guitarists' questions were asked at different times, with the likes of Slash, Ace Frehley and Michael Schenker alternating between 'them' and 'us' when talking about the major bands they've been in, but in a lot of cases the right questions have been asked and there are several definitive answers about important events in their history. The differing intelligence levels of the guitarists is sometimes obvious, but I'll let you find out some of the funny stuff on your own.

Like the Queen book reviewed here (this is by the same publisher) the only price I can find on it is in dollars, and $16.99 is quite high for a paperback of 250 pages, but for the guitarists and rock historians amongst us there's plenty to learn.
