A respectfully written and eminently enjoyable biography that loses very little by not being officially endorsed.

It's true that the Iron Maiden story has been told many times before, but in his latest book author Neil Daniels has put together a nice mix of text, pictures, lists and memorabilia that looks as good as anything else on the market. This 224 page coffee table-sized hardback features many quotes from most of the Iron Maiden alumni via archived interviews, a gorgeously reproduced selection of on and offstage photos, album and single artwork, gig posters, ticket stubs and even pics of most of the merchandise available on any particular tour, along with the tour dates and setlists. A selection of other journalists, including the likes of Mick Wall, Martin Popoff and our own John Tucker, give interesting overviews of their albums, and Neil ties it all together with his own detailed and perfectly weighted text.

What makes this book so easy to read is that no era or album in Maiden's career has been either overdone or skimmed over. For instance, it's nice to learn a little bit more about the much maligned Blaze Bayley era, their tireless manager Rod Smallwood or renowned album artist Derek Riggs, the latter in particular having played a huge part in the Iron Maiden brand with his iconic images. If I were to be pedantic there are a few factual and grammatical mistakes, and any Maiden fan worth his salt would have spotted the former, and also there are probably no bombshells that those particular fans won't already know about, but as a reasonably detailed story it does the job of giving a fair representation of the band members, their career and their relative personalities. As Daniels rightly points out; the band's enduring popularity has been maintained because leader Steve Harris and his bandmates and management have made far more good decisions than bad, and have kept their feet firmly on the ground despite their phenomenal success. Their sheer work ethic would put virtually any band of their age to shame, so the old saying about success being 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration certainly applies here.

At around £25, this is a respectfully written and eminently enjoyable biography that loses very little by not being officially endorsed. Neil Daniels' bibliography seems to be expanding at an alarming rate and this is probably his best work thus far, and certainly the most aesthetically pleasing.
