A welcome addition to the published works covering our particular musical milieu.

Published by: Tales Publishing Inc.

This 238 page soft cover book is something of a revelation if you happen to be a fan of any of the individuals interviewed by Michael Toney for this first volume of interviews with guys (and one gal) from the world of hard rock and heavy metal music.

They – in most cases here – very willingly share information about their lives not only within their particular musical sphere but also material of a broader nature. This, and the way the book is structured, makes for a very engaging coffee table book, to be read in very interesting chunks an interview at a time, or more if you have the time.

Fifteen individuals are covered here: Bruce Kulick, Jay Reynolds, Herman Rarebell, Tim "Ripper" Owens, Eddie Trunk, Jeff Duncan, Tracii Guns, Paul Shortino, Chris Holmes, Oz Fox, Steve "Lips" Kudlow, Betsy Bitch, Ron Keel, Brian Slagel and Brian Tichy and as with anybody looking into this book, some of the names meant more to me than others. And yet I found myself drawn into each of the characters in turn by Michael Toney's well researched understanding of each of his subjects, and as a number of their lives had interacted, a broader picture started to emerge in some instances, which added unexpected flavour and colour to the book as I was reading it.

The author has a style that fits in well with what you normally read from the usual contributors to this very magazine and the approach has been to include a range of questions that provide comparisons between all fifteen interviewees (such as "what kind of car do you drive?", "craziest groupie story?" and "what was your drug of choice back in the day?") along with a far greater number of specifics to each of his subjects in order to tease out their personalities and some of their more interesting experiences and musical histories, while following the Introduction is a cute page of facts that have little meaning (which the author has titled "Insignificância") of which one is "33.3% of the book's participants regularly smoke cigarettes. Of the smokers, 80% are lead guitar players".

If I have any criticism then it is that sharper editing could have been achieved in places between the question asked and the answer presented, suggesting that not all of the interviews were done face to face. I hope that this (albeit minor) gripe will be addressed when Volume 2 is produced. Nevertheless, 'Tales...' is a welcome addition to the published works covering our particular musical milieu and comes warmly recommended by me.
