An excellent book for movie buffs that will make any horror fan jealous as hell.

Published by: Stirling

Kirk Hammett is best known as the lead guitarist in the mega metal band Metallica but outside of the world of metal he is a devoted horror fan with an extensive collection of horror related stuff. In this beautifully designed book he shows off his treasure trove of movie posters, comics, toys and other collectables. It's seriously impressive stuff. The book is augmented by a series of Q&As taken by Metallica's fan magazine ('So What!') editor and creative director Steffan Chirazi. Hammett talks about what got him interested in collecting, and the first comics he bought and where he bought them. He started collecting memorabilia as a kid when he got into comics and Universal monster movies, and since then he's been obsessed, quite literally. He mentions that he stopped collecting when he got into metal and started playing guitar but picked up again as he got older. Of course, when Metallica started to make a lot of money in the late 1980s he resumed his collecting habits on a much larger scale.

The book is divided into chapters covering each decade from when his collection extends to as well as a section on toys and movie posters. What really interests me are the chapters on the 1970s and 1980s which display Hammett's collection of Hellraiser and Re-Animator memorabilia as well as items from classic John Carpenter and George A Romero movies. This particular reviewer (and probably also many Fireworks readers) is a huge fantasy and horror fan so I'm literally in awe of Hammett's collection. Perhaps he's gone a little too fan collecting such a wide range of toys as opposed to the high end stuff but it's his passion. When you have that kind of financial wealth collecting can be taken to a much higher level – Hammett owns movie props and full-scale monster statues as well as the everyday items that are obtainable from Forbidden Planet.

The one thing missing from this book are actual shots of how and where Hammett stores his stuff – his storage rooms, library and home cinema (I assume he has one!) because instead, we simply get scans of each item. I would have loved to have scene the collection the way it is archived. In the brilliant documentary 'Dreams With Sharp Teeth' about the sci-fi writer Harlan Ellison (who wrote the iconic Star Trek episode 'The City On The Edge Of Forever') we get to see Ellison's collection of books, magazines, comics and toys and how he stores them across his vast LA mansion, which he's called 'The Lost Aztec Temple Of Mars', with underground tunnels (I kid you not!) and vast rooms. It's simply glorious. But with Hammett we don't see that, which is a shame. Still, it's an excellent book for movie buffs and it'll make any horror fan jealous as hell.
