Great start.

Reviews Ed asked me if I wanted to write about this band. "It says in the bio that they sound like Coheed & Cambria," he said, and as a big fan of that band I of course said yes I'll give it a go. So when it dropped on the front door mat a few days later and I'd ripped open the package, I was rudely confronted with a cover that was filled with human sized animals, dressed in superhero lycra costumes, that were built like Arnold Schwarzenegger in his early bodybuilding days. A dog, a sexy rabbit girl, a tiger and more, were drawn in Marvel comic book fashion on the albums cover booklet. Taking centre stage and pride of place in this menagerie, the album's main protagonist and I think super powered penguin (I kid you not) Chico Chung. The album itself is a conceptual work, which is all about the creatures from the cover, who are trying to overthrow an evil regime and I have to say as a big fan of comics, the artwork and ideas that make up this story are fantastic.

That the music is of equal quality is a massive bonus because as Reviews Ed said, Emperor Chung do have a kind of Coheed thing going on, though they cannot be accused of being copyists. Instead they incorporate classic British rock sounds into their songs as well, probably because they come from Derbyshire. So growing up listening to British rock, and having songs that mix little bits of early Queen and Lizzy with the more modern rock of Coheed, all makes for a very interesting musical hybrid. EC also have something that all new bands and debut albums need, which is appealing, well played and above all else memorable songs. 'I Vow To This Day', 'Downpour' and 'To Bring Justice' start proceedings with a bang, hard hitting and energetic, these three tracks are the perfect way for this young band to introduce themselves to the world. Backing those wonderful songs with others just as strong is proof that Emperor Chung have the world at their feet. 'Pyramid', 'No Mercy', 'Victory's Calling' and 'Free At Last' are more superbly played and written songs that lovers of great music will enjoy listening to.

On the strength of this album Emperor Chung have taken a massive first step on the ladder to rock 'n' roll notoriety. If they keep on writing albums of this quality, they should soon become household names (well, in Fireworks & Orcktopia readers' houses anyway) in the world of rock. Great start.
