A majestic and powerful album that's more than a bit special.

Ever since this arrived, I've had people asking my thoughts on it. There seems a large groundswell of interest in this release and having now heard it, I can see why! Siren's Cry is a new female fronted Progressive Metal band from Austria. They formed in 2006 and released a demo entitled 'Draconian Spectrum' in 2009. They have now unleashed their full debut 'Scattered Horizons'.

I suggest you strap yourselves in tight as this is a real rollercoaster. Although this isn't the year's heaviest album, it's still a tour de force with a set of balls like the 'Van Wilder Party Animal' bulldog, (puts down the cream doughnut). The Egyptian inspired 'Sahara Sagas Pt. 1' is a huge ten minute creation broken into five parts that are seamlessly merged to create one song. There are instrumental sections full of Eastern melodies and traditional Egyptian singing which only adds authenticity. The other whopper at nine minutes is 'A Controversial Mind'; it's another multi-faceted song with plenty of keyboard and guitar duels but the highlight has to be the massive chorus and vocal line that you'll want to hear over and over. I've two other favourites on 'Scattered' the first of which would be 'Elegy Of R'lyeh' which is inspired by the H.P. Lovecraft novels. It's full of frenzied guitar work, exhausting rhythms, intense keyboard solos that are all topped off with a monstrously contagious chorus and a gothic choir. The other song that really stood out, aside from those mentioned, is 'Serpents Of War'. It chugs along until the band steps on the accelerator and punches it up a gear for a very memorable chorus where the vocals are again back up by the choir.

This is an astonishing release regardless of which genre perspective you're viewing from. 'Scattered Horizons' is an intense listening experience that demands plenty of attention and effort. It's technically off the scale and every bit as amazing as some of the best this year and last. Musically this lifts you by the britches and gives you a good smacking about before telling you to prepare for more. Siren's Cry reminded me of a cross between Epica (minus Mr Jansen as there's no growling) and Dream Theater/ Symphony X. If you're a fan of all three prepare yourself...this could get messy. This comparison extends to Katie Joanne who has a serious set of lungs and sounds uncannily like Simone Simons.

For all its fury this is still pretty cultured stuff and that's its strength and weakness. 'Scattered' is extremely Progressive and some may find it all too ostentatious, but it's so amazing that it might be one of those rare albums that permeates to fans of all genres. This is a majestic and powerful album that's more than a bit special; if you're a Progressive fan I strongly urge you to rally to this Siren's Cry.
