Heavy in places and frantic in others yet for all its diversity it still remains coherent and reasonably accessible.

Sacrifice To Survive...doesn't sound like much fun to me. I've always preferred copious excess to giving things up or making a sacrifice...unless of course you're talking about Justin Bieber. Now before that positive thought distracts you too much let me introduce Sacrifice To Survive; another new female fronted Progressive Metal project from Florida. They released one EP in early 2010 and were in the process of writing a second when they decided to make it a proper full length debut instead.

Just the term Progressive will have plenty of readers jumping to the next review, but hold fire good ladies and gentlemen because it's not that simple. STS may be built on a Prog foundation akin to Symphony X with swirling keys, machine gun paced axe work and some frantic rhythms but they incorporate so many other things. STS has given the expected complex compositions and musical interludes a fresh feel by using up to date melodies, modern breakdowns and mainstream progressions; there's even an Alternative edge in places. Each of the nine tracks merges into the next so everything flows almost uninterrupted from start to finish. There's urgency to the likes of 'Awakening', (with its skipping riff and vocals), and 'The Architect' which is probably the album's most Progressive song. Three tracks including 'It Dies With Winter' and 'Between Two Shelves' feature death growling and feel heavier for it despite some upbeat guitar playing. With a bouncing riff and lyrics 'Idle Hands' has a commercial feel that is almost chart like until the second half when the electrics kick in. 'Exile' is much the same with light and breezy parts that are broken up by the crunchy choral progression. STS closes out their debut with the impressive instrumental 'Entropy' which is full of scorching solos and fat progressions.

This isn't as colossal in terms of scale and ambitiousness as a couple of other Progressive releases this issue but it's still a splendid if unusual album. This is much more than just Progressive Metal; there's Alternative, Mainstream, Nu Metal, Pop and some retro influences all wrapped up in their sound. In fact there's probably even more in there than that if you keep digging. I can't really think of a comparison myself that doesn't involve several bands but I have seen one review that compared them to Coheed & Cambria in places.

Basically this is another of those albums that you just have to hear to appreciate. 'Sacrifice' is heavy in places and frantic in others yet for all its diversity it still remains coherent and reasonably accessible. If you're a fan of any of the above genres or someone with an eclectic taste why not check out this American act online and see if this is one sacrifice you would be willing to make.
