Very highly recommended!

Okay, you're in a successful band, then your singer decides he's going off to do a solo album. So what do you do? You stick together and continue as a power-trio!

The band in question is House Of Lords. While front-man James Christian was taking time out to record his rather good 'Lay It All On Me' album, the remaining three quarters, namely guitarist Jimi Bell, bassist Chris McCarvill and drummer BJ Zampa, formed Maxx Explosion, with McCarvill assuming lead vocal duties. And an admirable job he does too, with a powerful Glenn Hughes type roar yet coming on more like David Coverdale on the more reflective songs.

There is a healthy mix of styles across the thirteen tracks that make up 'Forever'. Three are pacey in-your-face rockers, first single 'Devil's Locomotive', 'Beat Around The Bush' and the awesome 'Suicide Door' that fans of Mr. Big will absolutely love, with McCarvill pummeling away at his bass in true Billy Sheehan style. The more commercial-sounding numbers like 'Falling Away', 'Cross Your Heart', 'Love Is A Nightmare', 'Rise' and 'Famous' aren't a million miles away from what the trio get up to with House Of Lords, but the sparser arrangements prevent them from sounding like they are trying to ape their day-job band. 'End Of The Line' swaggers along on an addictively funky riff and rhythm, but has a very melodic chorus, while 'Demon Wheel' comes with the tagline "Warning: this is a bass solo", but at two minutes doesn't outstay it's welcome and demonstrates McCarvill's mastery of his instrument.

All three ballads are wonderful inclusions too, the mid-tempo 'Don't Wanna Break' and 'Can't Stop Falling In Love' sound like hybrids of Def Leppard and Whitesnake due to the classy instrumentation and powerful vocal harmonies, while the closing 'Forever' is an expertly crafted slow-burning epic, with lyrics and vocals that David Coverdale would certainly approve of.
Fans of HOL should absolutely love this album, Chris McCarvill has really stepped up to the plate with a wonderful all-round performance, Jimi Bell fires off riffs and solos like a man possessed and BJ Zampa turns in his usual admirable performance, and as a huge fan of Zampa's style, my only slight complaint about this album is that I would prefer his contribution to be just a little higher in the mix.

I have to also thank John Kivel for supplying me with a signed copy of this CD. Very highly recommended!
