A beautiful album that I could chill out and relax to and let the music take me on a thought filled journey.

I predominately review at the heavier end of the magazine's spectrum and generally like my music riff fuelled and balls to the wall. But I also have a calmer side that enjoys music that makes you close your eyes and drift away in thought. The new release from Tides From Nebula is an album for such a time.

TFN is a Polish four piece instrumental band who formed in 2008 and released their debut 'Aura' in 2009 and the follow up 'Earthshine' in 2011. I haven't heard either of these but based on this I would describe their sound as ambient/atmospheric rock. That's not to say it doesn't have upbeat energy and good riffs; there's plenty of bounding rhythms and crunchy progressions but the lead guitar and keyboard melodies add a relaxing element. 'Eternal' has a very galactic/astrological feel with a concept inspired by thoughts on existence, consciousness and identity. It's all achieved using standard band instruments, (admittedly many types), rather than multiple layers of orchestration or extrovert musicianship. Opener 'Laughter Of Gods' features soaring and cascading guitar that ebbs and flows interspaced with some deep crunchy chord progressions that borders on Stoner Rock. The beginning of 'Only With Presence' has a revolving melody that feels like flying through a vortex as the dense churning riff and rhythm provides the journeys thrust. The keys eventually take more prominence as if to signify reaching maximum velocity. 'Now Run' is a step down in pace but there's still some pounding rhythm at the start. Certain passages include guitar reminiscent of U2's strummed echo effect although it's not as prominent as in their tracks. Of the eight songs 'Emptiness Of Yours And Mine' and 'Up From Eden' are seven and nine minutes respectively and both incorporate multiple mood, pace and intensity changes.

I've often listened to this with the lights off, looking out at the stars, and found 'Eternal' to be an interesting and captivating album. As far as instrumentals go, this isn't your typical virtuoso shred fest nor is it heavy dependent on outrageous riffs. TFN instead rely on different guitars for varied sounds and alternative approaches and techniques on the other instruments.

It maybe the sci-fi or astrological geek in me but I personally found 'Eternal' a beautiful album that I could chill out and relax to and let the music take me on a thought filled journey. But for those into virtuosos, heavy use of effects pedals or floor cracking power chords this may be a little too divergent. However if this does raise any interest I suggest checking it out online and see if you also fancy taking a ride amongst the stars.
