New album by the Polish Gothic Metal Band.

Gemini Abyss, from Lodz in the industrial heartland of central Poland, are following in the musical footsteps of forerunners such as Aion, Artrosis, Herjalf, Undish, Delight and Sirrah who've pioneered Eastern Europe's generation of Gothic Metal bands since the 1990s. There aren't too many Polish bands that are known internationally – possibly only Vader and Behemoth, but as good as they are, they're both at the extreme end of the Metal spectrum.

However, there is a burgeoning scene of Gothic/Symphonic Melodic Metal bands playing in Poland and other Eastern European territories and along with those already mentioned, newbies Gemini Abyss have thrown their metaphorical hat into the ring with this, their debut release, that features fabulous graphical artwork by Adrian Purgal. They bring a lot of progressive elements to their music with some symphonic leanings nestled amongst their Gothic charm but they have some way to go to match the fabulous Gothic Metal band UnSuN created by ex Vader guitarist Maurycy Stefanowicz and his vocalist wife Anna. That is the unquestionable benchmark for this young band, but having lived with this album for a while I can say that they have all the elements in place to become an established and respected unit.

Vocalist Klaudia Kikosicka has the technique but not quite the expressive soprano range as of yet and this occasionally hinders my enjoyment, such as on 'Land Of Death' which features nice crunching riffs from Tomasz Wasilewski, lead guitar handled by youngster Wojciech Sobierajski, swirling keys, and marching rhythms coupled with double bass drumming performed by Marcin Gamus alongside fellow time keeper bassist Maciej Malinowski.

The album starts and ends with film score type synths and spoken words with the title track full of progressive elements and strong riffing, with keyboard embellishment and male growls courtesy of Marcin Czyzewski mixed in with Klaudia's elongated singing. 'The Story' features plenty of Melodic Metal riffs with the male vocals similar to Marco Hietala on this occasion Klaudia is reminiscent of a young and raw Sharon den Adel, but it's the Polish language cover of celebrated pop artist Zdzislawa Sosnicka's 1987 hit song 'Aleja Gwiazd' (Alleyway Of Stars) that had me grinning from ear to ear. Having heard the original this is truly a terrific, faster hard edged version that keeps the familiar catchy keyboard refrain. I can't stop playing it and I can't stop humming it in my head!
