It remains depressing that music of this quality will go largely ignored.

As with many bands in recent times, Vertical Horizon have chosen to go down the route of getting the fans to finance their releases via Pledge music. Despite major record deals in the late nineties and a huge hit, the title track, from the debut album 'Everything You Want', like many other bands during the early part of 2000 they suffered from record label reorganization. Consequently follow up 'Go' wasn't promoted as it should have been and the band eventually re-released it in 2005 on a different label. A four year break then ensued before the band released 'Burning The Days' in 2009.

You can't keep a good man down though and Matt Scannell, a songwriter far too talented to simply disappear, is back with the latest Vertical Horizon offering. Opening with the upbeat Richard Marx penned 'You Never Let Me Down' it's clear that Vertical Horizon stay true to their roots. Brilliantly written melodic pop rock tunes pepper the album; 'Broken Over You' is as good a Vertical Horizon as you are likely to hear, the emotive 'Evermore' likewise and the brilliant 'Instamatic' features Neil Peart on drums.

'Echoes From the Underground' is an album of two halves, the first features the more familiar upbeat pop rock associated with Vertical Horizon and the second is perhaps more reflective and downbeat. The song writing brilliance still shines through on the Neon Trees-like 'Love Struck' or on the mellow dream-like 'Frost' where Scannell paints a picture of the impending winter as it's ushered in by the autumn but it's far more experimental. That it works so successfully is down to Scannell and his talent and yet it remains depressing that music of this quality will go largely ignored except by a hard core of fans that know that something special is worth keeping hold of.

This is a wonderful album, and highly recommended to all lovers of great melodic rock. I bought my copy on the strength of Mike's review, and I am now starting to go back through their previous albums and getting those too!!

Don't miss this one....
