This album provides a great launch pad for the future successes I am sure the band will reap.

This is the second album from the Greek band whose debut (2007s clumsily- titled 'Only A Dream, Can Kill A Dream') featured only the guitarist (Andreas V) and the drummer (Themis Thomopoulos) of the current quintet. Described in their information sheet as having a musical style that is "a unique combination of melodic metal, progressive rock and soundtrack music" I had great expectations!

Well, as usual, the hyperbole of the copywriter is the winner, as there proves to be little that can be considered "unique" as Floating Worlds have jumped into the increasingly crowded waters of melodic Euro metal. However, I am more than delighted to report that this is by no means a standard effort and there is much to applaud in an album that covers quite a wide variety of styles and approaches. Main vocals are from Jon Soti but keyboardist Christine Kolliopoulou also harmonises ('Amyrah' being a prime example of how well this works) and on 'Till The End' provides counter lead vocals that are wonderful.

The delightful keyboard-laden instrumental 'Garden Of Souls' gets the album off to an emphatic, symphonic start. Contrasting "plinky" keyboards and strident guitar at the start of 'Shattered' lead into the first appearance of Soti's melodious baritone voice that pleasantly suits the material. There are quite a few different ideas explored in this track, and it's a winning melodic metal number, with a progressive undercurrent. However, annoyingly, it fades! 'Angel' starts off brightly enough but on this one Soti's voice seems somewhat awry in places, and the finished production is a little messy. However, it is the only blemish on an otherwise impressive album and even so, the song itself is a winner even if the finished recording is not.

'Thrill The Night' takes a hard rock approach and Kolliopoulou provides the main lead vocal on a song that I'm sure is a winner in the live setting. 'Soul Saviour' is a largely pacey number following a sweet intro while 'Revenge' is a book-ending instrumental again containing some wonderful moments.

Floating Worlds are certainly not the finished article, but this album provides a great launch pad for the future successes I am sure the band will reap.
