Title

Vengeance continue to go from strength to strength.

Whatever your thoughts on the merits (or otherwise) of Dutch veterans Vengeance, since their return from the rock 'n' roll wilderness with the smoking 'Back In The Ring' opus back in 2006, the one thing they haven't done is rest on their laurels.

The dust has barely settled on last year's snarling 'Crystal Eye' release, but with the silly season now looming ever larger on the horizon, they're back with the equally evocative and powerful 'Piece Of Cake' (a somewhat apt title given the obstacles they've had to surmount over the years, not to mention the apparent ease with which they seem to write and record these days).

Built around a potent mix of broiling, AC/DC infused riffs and gravelly, yet warmly melodic vocals (Leon Goewie is certainly in a class of his own here); like a fine wine Vengeance just seem to get better and better with age. OK, they're probably not going to win too many prizes in the originality stakes, but in their chosen theatre of war they could pretty much blast anybody off the battlefield on even an average day.

The style they perfected with 'Take It Or Leave It' and 'Arabia' back in the 80s and then brought vividly back to life with the aforementioned 'Back In The Ring' is still very much en vogue, and as you'd rightly expect, the beating heart of Vengeance. Don't take that to mean that they're simply just rehashing old ideas however, as that really isn't the case at all here. Yes, there's a warm familiarity to much of the album, but with tracks like the paradoxical 'Sandman' (all snarling vocal lines one minute and smooth time changes the next), fractious 'Headquake' and pumping 'World Arena' they seem to have unearthed a renewed vigour (not bad for a band who've been in the business for nearly 30 years!).

Injecting more than enough changes of mood and pace (see 'Tears From The Moon', 'Mirrors' and 'Raintime') and ramping up the dynamics with another totally in your face production, Vengeance continue to go from strength to strength.
