Yet another contender for my 'Albums of the Year' vote.

I'll be eternally grateful to good friend Paul Jerome Smith for introducing me to the wonderful Venice. They hold a place in my list of ten best gigs; the show I witnessed one Remembrance Sunday was a thing of stunning beauty and lives large in my memory.

It's been a seven year break since their last studio album ('Amsterdam') of new material but a chunk of time has been lost to Roger Waters picking various members of the band as his backing vocalists for his 'The Wall' extravaganzas.

For the uninitiated Venice are blood relations (the Lennon's), two sets of brothers who also happen to be cousins, their raison d'etre is marvellously melodic songs with delightful vocals and harmonies to die for. They sit at the gentle end of the AOR/West Coast genre and if it not for the hubbub of chatter you get from the audience at Firefest, which would overwhelm the band's subtlety, I think they'd go down a storm at that event.

There's plenty of good news where this album is concerned, not least that it's a double CD. The band's website states they tried to trim it to a single disc but couldn't drop any of the songs: a sentiment I agree with because there's not a weak track amongst the twenty on offer. I'm no fan of horns, but even the two songs that feature them have grown on me after a few plays. 'A Thing About Love' has a very dated organ sound and a Steely Dan vibe while 'It's Gonna Be Right' is lent an Earth Wind & Fire feel. Opening number 'What's Done Is Done' has a feel of The Eagles/Don Henley about it and represents a glorious start. The Latin influenced 'Forever' adds a different shade to the Venice palette. The acoustically driven 'Chemistry' brings to mind America, while 'She's Gonna Be the One' has part of its foot in the Billy Joel camp, an influence that appears later on 'Mi Casa Es Su Casa', again it shows a different side to the band. 'Hold Me', 'The Point', 'When I'm Gone', 'The Way I See You' and 'Isabelle' are all typically beautiful Venice ballads; 'Shake it Up' and 'Don't Give Up On Me' both have particularly infectious choruses. The title track features some exquisite harmony vocals; no matter which Lennon takes the lead vocal there's no difference in quality just the flavour and always the one that best fits the particular song. 'The Go To Guy' reminds me of Joe Walsh while closing number, 'High So High' is one of the more up tempo numbers.

It's yet another contender for my 'Albums of the Year' vote...

Thought at first a 2cd set would be too much, and at first, it was! Having persevered for a number of weeks most of the songs have grown on both myself and my wife. Value for money it is but reducing the package to a 12/13 song set would have made it possibly their best release to date and our album of the year! What's done is done is an OK song, but having waited 7 years, this being their first single from the set, a bit disappointing. Having said that, when the discs arrived and we started playing them, this was our least favourite on the set. So it only got better! The point being one of our faves but a favourite amongst many! Firefest would have been a good introduction to Venice, but alas, it will not happen! A push from a decent promoter to introduce Venice to the UK could be lucrative but seems to be unlikely. A crying shame!

  • SeaDog57 : just an observation. I just got Issue 89 at the Bookstore and when i looked at the spine of the magazine it says "Fireworks Issue 85 Winter Jan - Mar 2019" Was this a misprint? The rest of the Magazine is Issue 89. Was just wondering did anyone else notice this?
