Great to have you back at long last guys ... please don't leave it another ten years!

For an album that's been eagerly anticipated for the best part of the last decade now, the release of 'Revenant' seems to have been kept quite a closely guarded secret!

A Swedish, progressively tinged power metal band who's hypnotic machinations often strayed close to doom territory, Tad Morose made their debut some 20 years ago with the wonderful 'Leaving The Past Behind' – I ignored 'em for years under the mistaken illusion they were a nu-metal band; boy was I wrong! Over the course of the next decade they released five further albums, a mini album and a compilation, releases which between them contained some of the best, most hypnotic power metal the European scene has ever seen. Then sadly it all started to unravel.

Vocalist Urban Breed (Bloodbound, Trail Of Murder) was the first to leave, line-ups came and went and months dragged on into years; to all the world it looked as if the once mighty Tad Morose banner had finally met its Waterloo. Fortunately, and thanks in no small part to the tenacity of guitarist Christer Andersson and drummer Peter Morén, a stable line-up has now been achieved and the Tad Morose juggernaut is once again ready to roll onwards.

Former Steel Attack frontman Ronny Hemlin has been drafted in to replace Breed, and whilst his voice is quite a departure, the moody Queensryche meets Obsession feel he brings to the table actually fits in quite well with the new material. Talking of which, after that quite verbose intro, let's get down to business shall we? The question we're all thinking (me included) is how does this stack up against the band that released such classics as 'Sender Of Thoughts' and 'A Mended Rhyme'? Well ... despite what you may have read elsewhere the answer from my perspective at least is 'quite well actually'. There's enough of a feel of the old Tad Morose to draw favourable comparisons, yet there's enough of a difference to dispel any idea of desperate self-plagiarism.

Some of the tracks motor a little more than the Tad Morose of old (although in fairness they were heading that way on occasions back in 2003), but the deft blend of musicianship, tantalising light and shade and teasing hooks definitely grabs your attention. Opener 'Beneath A Veil Of Crying Souls' (what a superb title!) is perhaps the closest stylistically speaking to the Tad Morose of old, and on that basis alone it serves as a tasty introduction to the likes of 'Follow' (which errr .. follows), 'Within A Dream', 'Ares', 'Dance Of The Damned' and the awesome 'Absence Of Light'.

As I said earlier, Hemlin gives a good account of himself, and Andersson has clearly formed a strong partnership with new guitarist Tommi Karppanen (ex Morgana Lefay) as the pair attack the new material with real relish.

Great to have you back at long last guys ... please don't leave it another ten years!
