Human Fortress have returned with an album that once again highlights the more melodic side of their music.

Human Fortress was formed by guitarists Volker Trost and Torsten Wolf and the band can trace its roots as far back as 1999. Initially signed to Limb Records, the band played songs of the melodic power metal variety and their first two albums were well received. By 2008 however the band had lost their original singer and they then drafted in Carsten Frank (GalloGlass/Athorn) as their new vocalist. Unfortunately they also went in a much heavier direction musically and their third album 'Eternal Empire' added in a thrash element, which saw the album fall by the wayside.

Moving on to 2013 and we now find the band (that I had thought long broken up) back with a brand new album. Also in tow is another new vocalist, namely the excellent Gus Monsanto (Adagio/Revolution Renaissance) in place of Frank. Monsanto's presence seems to have been the shot in the arm the band has needed and an invigorated Human Fortress have returned with an album that once again highlights the more melodic side of their music.

Starting with the title track Human Fortress have maybe chosen (for me) the wrong track to hit you with first. It's one of the heavier songs on the album and isn't representative of what is to come, which is a fine group of melodic hard rock/metal songs, that at times reminded me a lot of Evidence One and Frontline. What is also evident as the next three tracks 'Child Of War', 'Wasted Years' and 'The Chosen One' play, is that HF have really worked hard to get the most out of each song and have instilled in them a lot of highly melodic refrains that drive the tracks along and keep you wanting more. Other stand out cuts for me are the cleverly arranged 'Dark Knight', the forceful 'Restless Souls' and the cracking 'Guard The Blind' where the two guitarists Trost and Wolf really cut loose and have fun whilst they play.

Hopefully Human Fortress can keep a stable line-up from now on and if they can and they continue to recorded albums of this quality then, their future is once again a very bright one.
