High energy rock band from Zurich.

Formed in the year 2000, Backwash is a high energy rock band from Zurich. They recorded an EP 'Feel Rock' in 2003 before following up three years later with their first full length album, 'Kick Ass'. Since then they have added a guitarist and changed their singer. This line up has released this self titled second album.

Opener 'Against All Odds' comes flying out of the blocks but the momentum is halted by the poorly titled 'Sniff Me'. This features lyrical gems such as "Sniff me down here and sniff me down there/If you wanna get a kick, sniff me everywhere". Say what? If you're Spinal Tap or Steel Panther you can get away with that, but unless I've massively missed the point, I don't get the impression that Backwash have put themselves in that comedy bracket. It only gets worse with 'One Last Drink (Before We Have Another)'. I like the title, but the lyrics about getting drunk quickly descend into banality with "And if tomorrow never comes/Fuck that, this just feels so right." This suddenly becomes eloquent prose when you get to the final verse, which proudly proclaims 'So what, the toilet needs a wipe/But I still feel like staying in all night".

The problem is one that repeats itself throughout the album. Despite several of the songs having decent riffs or ideas, they are let down by clunky, pedestrian, obvious or just plain cringeworthy lyrics. I refer you to Exhibit C – the song 'I'd Rather Rock N' Roll' which features the lyrics "So I grab her ass with passion/But she slaps my hand/Isn't dinner what you came for? She asked/For fucks sake/I'd rather rock n' roll". Then or course we have 'Somethin' Hard'. You can easily guess the lyrical subject, but here's a sample: "You're giving me something hard/Incredibly hard/Come on, why won't you come and grab it right now".

David Coverdale got stick for writing 'Slide It In', but next to these guys he's a celebrated poet laureate. If they are indeed not serious, they need to indicate it. Spinal Tap had a funny film and funny liner notes. Steel Panther have clear indications on their album art and photos that they are not to be taken seriously. Backwash have none of these things, which means if they are taking the mick, people won't necessarily know. If they aren't, their lyrics need some serious work, as they detracted massively from what are some decent song ideas.
