Despite the dark thematic scope, 'As Angels Bleed' has a strong commercial appeal.

The cover artwork for this band's debut album (they are a gothic-symphonic metal band from Sydney Australia), features a buxom wench clutching a burning candelabra with blood dripping from her lips and led me to approach my first play with some trepidation. Once more it is a case of judging books and covers. After just one spin I was simply blown away by everything the CD contained.

'Sinfully Yours' is a bold, powerful opening statement, peppered with staccato drums and brutally melodic riffs. It is a nicely paced six minute mini epic with a great guitar solo and indicates from the off that As Angels Bleed have created something special. The album features some strong gothic influences, complimented by the band's image and lead singer Avelina De Moray has a hypnotic vocal quality that suits the dark nature of the material perfectly. The delivery is sensual and passionate and draws the listener into a musical embrace almost impossible to break free from. Song titles such as 'Carfax Abbey', 'Bloody Kisses' and 'Beautifully Decayed' hint at the subject matter and though the album is not conceptual as a whole there is a definite theme running through each song.

'Desire' sees the first appearance of male vocals giving the sound something of a Lacuna Coil (circa 'Comalies') dynamic, once more featuring an imaginatively constructed guitar solo, whilst the uptempo 'Driven To Flames' is a personal favourite and includes Avelina's best Cristina Scabbia. 'I Drown' is slightly repetitive and consequently has less impact than other songs. It meanders to the six minute mark and though the male vocals appear once more they have a coarser edge and add little in the way of contrast. The aforementioned 'Beautifully Decayed' brings the album to a close and is a ten minute epic, pretty much a summarisation of everything that has gone before. Subtle one minute and bombastically overblown the next, running the gauntlet of musical and lyrical emotions, everything but the crypt-keeper's sink is thrown in.

Despite the dark thematic scope, 'As Angels Bleed' has a strong commercial appeal. The sound is huge, the choral and orchestral passages performed by the 105 piece Hells Gate symphonic Orchestra simply stunning in their application and accentuation. For an independently created and produced concept 'As Angels Bleed' has my total admiration. It may not be everyone's goblet of "O Negative" but the work that has gone into it (apparently Avelina has also created a 64 page embossed leather bound book expanding the gothic concept that includes portraits, photography and artwork) should be given at least a little bit of time.....possibly before the sun comes up!
