A surefire winner.

Like Axel Rudi Pell, Dushan Petrossi's Iron Mask hit on a winning formula early on in their career and as the old adage goes if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Therefore, if you have heard any of the previous Iron Mask albums, you'll know just the sort of thing to expect before you play 'Fifth Son Of Winterdoom'.

For me this isn't a problem because again just like Mr Pell, Iron Mask never let you down musically. So if an album of highly melodic symphonic neo-classical power metal, with Yngwie/Ritchie like guitar work, killer vocals (from Mark Boals) and a tremendous rhythm section floats your proverbial boat, then this latest album from Iron Mask should feature on your shopping list forthwith!

Try out the guitar heavy 'Like A Lion In A Cage' where Mr Petrossi really lets loose, or the enthralling 'Eagle Of Fire' where Mark Boals shows us just how good a metal singer he is, or even the fast paced 'Run To Me' which has a real hard rock feel to the music for proof that even though this isn't a million miles away musically from what has gone before from Iron Mask, this is still really great music to listen to. Then we come to the three epic tracks on the album, each clocking in at an average of eight minutes plus: 'Fifth Son Of Winterdoom', 'Reconquista 1492' and the Iron Maiden like 'The Picture Of Dorian Grey'. It's these three songs that I think show where Iron Mask should take their music in the future: to the longer more grandiose end of the metal song spectrum because I think that these three tracks are the real backbone of the album. They are the songs the rest of this CD is built upon and I could listen to them many, many times and never get bored.

So it's five albums down and if Iron Mask keep on making CDs of such a high standard, then who are we to complain? Another strong and dependable release from one of the best neo-classical bands out there today. A surefire winner.
