A stellar release that's fresh and diverse with plenty of theatrical flair.

'Future Memories' is the debut release from this German female fronted quintet. I've seen them listed as Symphonic Metal which isn't inaccurate, but there is also a large Modern Metal slant to their music as well as a concept story that adds a Progressive edge. A couple of songs include some techno synth and one even includes trumpet! Even the term "female fronted" is a bit deceiving as several songs include equal amounts of female and male vocals, (which are more scowled than growled).

The concept story itself is about two characters living in a world called Utopia which is governed by manipulation and illusions. One song that sums up SOS's varied style is the main opener 'Utopia' with its modern styled riff, vocals and synth interwoven with gothic choirs and arrangements. Another would be 'Inside' with a belter of a revolving riff, swirling orchestration and attitude-filled dual vocals. If you want something off the wall, 'The Joker' is a wildly diverse song that has rapidly become one of my favourites. It opens with trumpet before a cracking riff erupts backed by some techno synth that leads to a rather infectious chorus. It also includes vocal input from David Dein as the song's title character. My other favourite has to be the twelve minute epic 'Civilisation', where SOS goes fully Symphonic with a plethora of grand arrangements. The vocals range from mellow to theatrical to powerful with the song being is just as varied musically with different guitar progressions and changes of pace and power. For those preferring something more sedate there's the power ballad 'Shadows' and 'Once Upon A Time' where SOS dials everything down relying on piano, acoustic guitar and sweeping orchestration.

'Memories' is an album that I adore more and more with every listen. It's a stellar release that's fresh and diverse with plenty of theatrical flair which worked a treat for me. It's the mixture of inspirations that's the reason I think this could hold plenty of interest to a large swathe of Female Fronted fans regardless of whether you're into the modern style of Lacuna Coil or the orchestration of Nightwish/Within Temptation. Christina Groner has a quality singing voice that is comparable to Cristina Scabbia or Annette Olzon whilst Robert Mansk is scarily similar to Andrea Ferro. Mansk and Niklas Rach on guitars have concocted and play some pretty catchy riffs and progressions that help bind all the different aspects together.

If this top notch album sounds like your cup of tea then I welcome you to be a sinner with me and let's do our best to make sure that's not kept a secret too long.
