Absolutely brilliant.

Over the last couple of issues* I have mentioned that 2013 has been one hell of a year for rock music (whatever the genre), whether it be albums from established acts or debut releases from new bands, not a month has gone by when something exciting hasn't crossed our musical paths.

To the illustrious list of names and albums released in 2013, I would now like to add that of Oxford based quartet Prospekt. With their album 'The Colourless Sunrise' this band have recorded one of the strongest debuts I have heard all year. For prog metal fans 'The Colourless Sunrise' has just about everything you could want. Superb musicianship, especially the amazing guitar work of Lee Luland, strong melodies, powerful vocals courtesy of Richard Marshall and a fantastic production all meld together to make an album that you will listen to and enjoy with gusto many, many times.

'A Desolate Kingdom' starts things off and it is immediately apparent that the maturity in the song writing that the four young men comprising Prospekt have injected into their music is of the highest possible calibre. Complicated guitar and keyboard interplay is joined with spectacular vocal lines and the bass and drum rhythm section combines seamlessly to help build up each of the songs until they reach their explosive climax. 'Dissident Priests', 'Shroud', the quite astonishing in its complexity 'The Colourless Sunrise', 'The Great Awakening' and 'Hunting Poseidon' furthermore prove that Prospekt are a new progressive force to be reckoned with.

The first time I heard bands such as Threshold, Aeon Zen, Enochian Theory, My Soliloquy, Haken, Tesseract and Head Space, I fell in love with their music. What made them all the more special for me was that they were British., and that they were taking on their European and US counterparts and showing them all that they could write and produce progressive metal, as complex, intricate and as good as anyone else. On the strength of this amazing album, Prospekt will I'm sure soon be able to take their rightful place along side their more established colleagues and show everyone that they are here and here to stay.

Absolutely brilliant.
