The defining statement of their career so far.

All too often when a band strikes out in a new direction or seeks to stretch their sound, they end up making the sore thumb of their catalogue, an album that blemishes an otherwise spotless canon of work. However every now and again an outfit uses this jumping off point to redefine and sharpen what they do, find new purpose and reach new heights. For Sahg, up till now Sabbath and Zeppelin sound dependers, 'Delusions Of Grandeur' is one such album.

Not that what Sahg have produced previously has been substandard, or uninspired, far from it; 'Sahg I', 'II' and 'III' all being bristling examples of scathing riffs and doom laden bursts which immediately conjure up the words Sabbath and Black. However with this fourth offering Sahg have sought to expand their sound and broaden their horizons. Not in a way that will confuse or disappoint their existing fan base, instead using their established approach as a launching pad into pastures fresh, yet still reassuringly familiar.

The album itself is a concept piece based round a character so sick for power and control that he literally loses touch with reality and figuratively with the universe in which we reside. In itself new ground for Sahg. Musically, gargantuan riffs still form the basis of the eight tracks here, however deeper, more complex passages break up the brutal barrage of bulging guitars and an up 'til now unheard of Progressive side begins to form much of the structure on which the songs flourish. The results are deeply impressive, the storytelling embellishing the music, the music helping to reinforce the story – neither ever tripping the other. 'Slip Off The Edge Of The Universe' sets the tone, guitars juddering into a gyrating riff, vocals airily setting the scene, 'Firechild' ups the intensity, positively careening into your consciousness through precise singing, tumultuous beats and booming bass, all the while the guitars of Olav Iversen and Thomas Tofthagen positively sparking with energy. 'Ether' however expands on the themes, pushing the technicality and atmosphere, while 'Sleeper's Gate To The Galaxy', where the story's protagonist initially gently, then violently floats away from reality, is a genuine slice of 70s Progressive Heavy Rock brought right into the here and now.

A great band already, Sahg have upped their ante with 'Delusions Of Grandeur' to seriously stunning effect and in doing so created the defining statement of their career so far.
