Second album by the Austrian power metal act.

Austrian power metal act Dignity released their debut album 'Project Destiny' to critical acclaim way back in 2008 and then everything just seemed to go wrong for the band. After the first album hit the shelves to rave reviews, the band decided that straight after touring they would quickly get back into the studio to record a follow up album. Unfortunately due to some lengthy technical issues the recording process on the new album was held up for over a year. When those problems were resolved and things were just getting back up to speed, the band's original guitarist quit. After replacing him with Phil Porter the band settled down to continue recording the new album, when their original singer then upped and left as well. This again saw Dignity at a standstill, until thankfully the band found a replacement in former Artillery man Soren 'Nico' Adamsen.

So finally after all these stop and start moments, the band finally caught a break, which soon became this brand new album called 'Balance Of Power'. Now there's a couple of things I'd like to get off my chest about this album; firstly after five long years, why do we only get nine new songs and a cover (more of which later) and secondly as good as these songs are, I would expect that if a band worked on them for that long a period of time, that the songs wouldn't be just good ones but instead they would be great ones...

It's a shame then that while there is nothing inherently wrong with this album (the performances, production and song writing all being of a high standard), I still found 'Balance Of Power' a mostly average listening experience. Songs like 'Rebel Empire', 'Rise', 'Save Me', 'Angels Cry' and 'Freedom Reign' whilst having all the right ingredients to make great melodic power metal songs, failed to capture my attention after the album had finished playing. Additionally, covering 'Blackout' by the Scorpions isn't a good idea, especially if you're just going to do a straight copy and not try and inject something of yourselves into the song.

So although 'Balance Of Power' isn't a bad album at all, after so long away and with so many years to hone new songs I was expecting a little more from this release. Maybe now they have a stable line-up, album number three will be the one to blow us away?
