A concept album/rock opera of some 25 tracks.

Well now, here's something that's completely off the wall...a crossover between academic research and rock music! Legendary Mountain drummer Corky Laing has teamed up with two internationally acclaimed philosophers (Professors Matti Häyry and Dr. Tuija Takala) in a joint effort bringing together 70s style music and contemporary moral problems of gene technology. It's a concept album/rock opera of some 25 tracks and a playing time of just over an hour with 'Playing God' a musical metaphor for attempting to achieve perfection in our modern world.

As the press release says: "musically the album covers many feels and approaches from soft ballads to riff-driven guitar rock, from meditative instrumentals to operatic melody lines"...while..."at its core, the guitar-bass-drums combo is complemented with powerful singing." Recorded in Finland, at various studios including the renowned Finnvox, seven of the instrumentalists and vocalists (male and female) are also from Finland, and as would be expected, the production and performances are first rate. The storyline is also easy to follow, with all lyrics and linking narrative in the detailed booklet.

Should you care? Well, my answer to this question has to be somewhat ambivalent! Sure there are some great songs to be encountered such as 'Not Good Enough', 'Meltdown' and 'Mr C's Demise' being particularly notable, as are the short instrumental sections 'Gods March', 'Tim's Requiem' and 'Sisterhood'. But there's the rub. I do realise that to have turned these into extended sections would have perhaps unbalanced the work, but on the other hand it would have given 'Playing God' more of the substance necessary to encourage repeat listens. I always plan to give each album reviewed a minimum of six hearings in order to tease out all the nuances and to assess its "staying power". I admit to giving this album just the one listen, and although I need to confirm that I did enjoy the experience, I feel it is not an experience necessary to repeat in its entirety (although I will return to some of the songs individually in the future)...

'Playing God' has much more the aura and approach of a musical show and suited to a theatrical performance. It could, I am sure, be successful if presented in such a format: and of course the key is that the audience would hear it just the once, and this is, I believe, the key here.
