Second album by Adrenaline Mob.

Much like The Winery Dogs, the genesis of Adrenaline Mob (AM) is inextricably intertwined with the increasingly eclectic journey being undertaken by Mike Portnoy following his departure from Progressive Metal titans Dream Theater.

Formed by Portnoy, Symphony X front man Russell Allen and guitar shredder Mike Orlando in the early part of 2011, the budding 'supergroup' released their full length debut 'Omerta' about a year later, following that up last year with their 'Coverta' tribute EP. They have more in common with the angst fuelled sonic rage of bands like Gobsmack or Black Label Society than anything else. But whilst not the easiest of listens when you first come across them, their vitriolic bile was nevertheless quite compelling in a disturbingly masochistic way.

Not surprisingly, Portnoy has moved on to pastures new with the aforementioned The Winery Dogs and as we approach the release date for their sophomore effort 'Men Of Honor', we find that his departure isn't the only change in the AM ranks – indeed only Allen and Orlando remain from the original incarnation of the band with the engine house now comprising of bassist John Moyer (Disturbed) and drummer AJ Pero (Twisted Sister). Musically too, whilst there are obvious parallels to be drawn with 'Omerta', the unfettered brutality has now been channelled and refined into something much more focussed and succinct. That's not to say that they can't still stick seven lace holes up your jacksie whenever they feel the urge...it's just that now they'll distract you by whispering sweet nothings in your lughole whilst they're doing it!

In all seriousness, whilst I don't have a problem with bands from the heavier, more aggressive end of the spectrum, in a lot of cases belligerence and attitude is used as a smokescreen to obscure their lack of talent or ideas ... not so Adrenaline Mob. Allen continues to impress with his abrasive vocal roar whilst Orlando spits and snarls like a cornered wild cat. This time around songs such as 'Men Of Honor', 'Behind These Eyes' and 'House Of Lies' sound much more mature and varied and as a consequence are a bit easier to digest and (subsequently) become familiar with – hell... there's even enough cleverly structured melodies to make your average Symphony X diehard sit up and take notice!

Second albums often come as a huge disappointment after promising debuts... nice to see one band at least bucking the trend!
