Don’t be put off by the ‘concept’ side of ‘ThunderProject’. This is an album of some Classic, Melodic and Power Metal.

Despite the fact that Rush proved with ‘Clockwork Angels’ that concept albums can still win a place in our hearts, it also showed that you have to be pretty special to do it. Italy based Riccardo Scaramelli has neither Rush’s standing or level of support, but has still managed to pull off a very creditable album on a purely musical level, although I have my doubts about the strength and relevance of the concept. Twelve songs, based around the book ‘The Land Of The Light’ tells the story of a fantasy journey and acquiring the mental strength to deal with change and challenges.

Admittedly, I haven’t seen the full book and packaging which may well bring things more together, but what the album does give us is an intricate mix of full blown Power Metal with a fair dose of melody, subtlety, and emotional echoes. ‘Revolution’ kicks things off with a fast paced Metal romp; a simple yet memorable chorus immediate bringing to mind a combination of Nickelback at their rawest and Queensryche. Indeed ‘Operation Mindcrime’ is something to compare this to, although not quite reaching those standards. ‘Change to Change’ has a heavier, Sabbath inspired riff, but still manages pull off some engaging melodies to offset the darker side. ‘The Thunder’ is another guitar based rocker but with keyboards more to the fore akin to the melodic power of Ten.

At the other end of the scale ‘Back To Paradise’ is a slower ballad, full of echoing guitar and not much other distortion with an excellent solo matching the feel of the song and showing they aren’t all just power and speed. There’s plenty more on offer, ‘Firewind’ arrives with a Judas Priest like intro and ‘Lost In Déjà vu’ conjures up visions of early Dio.

But don’t get the impression this is just ripping off eighties Metal. Scaramelli’s vocals are excellent throughout and there’s plenty of range and variation in the guitar to compliment the feel of each song. The ‘concept’ part of things is enhanced by several tracks being prefaced by an interlude or introduction which gives an almost Symphonic effect. There’s some classic oriental music with chimes and pipes, some Arabic influences, most of which work well before leading smoothly into the song proper.

Don’t be put off by the ‘concept’ side of ‘ThunderProject’. This is an album of some Classic, Melodic, Power Metal that shifts through a range influences from the raw power of early Queensryche to the melody and harmonies of Ten. Without the full package, the concept aspect doesn’t seem particularly strong, the strength and appeal of this lies in the music itself which is top class.
