80’S MELODIC ROCK BAND “CHINA SKY” RELEASES DOCUMENTARY FILM AND RETURNS TO THE STUDIO AFTER 25 YEAR

80’s rockers CHINA SKY, best known for their 1988 hits “Some Kind Of Miracle” and “The Glory”,  have released a new documentary short film detailing the band’s history, and are back in the studio for the first time in over 25 years.

The band, hailed as “megastars in the making” by Derek Oliver in Kerrang magazine, broke up just two months after the release of their self-titled debut album in September of 1988, after numerous bad breaks, and the defection of guitarist Bobby Ingram to southern rock band Molly Hatchet. In the years following, CHINA SKY  has amassed something of a cult following among listeners of what is now called “melodic rock”, and the album has become a sought-after collectors item.

“A few years ago, I began to receive inquiries from all over the world about China Sky”, says lead vocalist Ron Perry. “I had no idea anyone even remembered China Sky, and I was floored by the renewed interest”. Sensing an opportunity to re-visit what he viewed as “unfinished business”, Perry called his old bandmate, bassist Richard Smith, who was equally jarred at the resurgence in popularity of an album that had been all but forgotten about by the musicians who recorded it. Says Smith: “We put everything we had into that music. To know that there are people out there still listening to China Sky after all this time…what a great feeling”.

Buoyed by the new wave of interest in the band, Perry and Smith have returned to the studio with a new group of veteran rockers in tow.

Guitarist Steve Wheeler was actually a bandmate of original guitarist Bobby Ingram in the early 80’s group “THE DANNY JOE BROWN BAND”, and had known Perry and Smith for over 20 years. “Steve was a very natural choice for China Sky”, says Perry.

Drummer Bruce Crump spent 15 years as the original drummer in the southern rock powerhouse MOLLY HATCHET, and had actually discussed joining China Sky in the 80’s. “My manager talked me out of it” recalls Crump, “so I’m thrilled to finally be sitting in the drum chair for China Sky”.

Keyboardist Tim McGowan hails from western Scotland, and has played for numerous groups including melodic rock band “BURNING IN DECEMBER” and former Lynyrd Skynryd guitarist RANDALL HALL’s backing band. Says McGowan, “My agent told me about a band from America that was looking for a keyboard player. When I found out it was China Sky, it was like wow! I remember those guys from back in the day, I was blown away!”

The band’s new documentary short film entitled “CHINA SKY – SO HERE’S THE STORY…” tells the behind-the-scenes story of China Sky, and gives a sneak peek at  the video for their forthcoming single “One Life”. The film can be seen on youtube,

The new album is expected some time in the summer of 2014.
