With five good-looking girls and a set of catchy songs, what's not to like?

Though relatively unknown in the UK, Indica are a Finnish Pop Rock five-piece who have achieved a great deal of success in their homeland. Formed in 2001, 'Shine' is the band's sixth full-length release but only the second to be sung in English, following on from 2010's 'A Way Away'. I'm a big fan of Kelly Clarkson and Pink, having submitted reviews for both in the past, so I am fairly open-minded when it comes to musical styles. If I'm honest the sound here is more Pop than Rock though not the brand of Pop music associated with the likes of Lady Gaga or Katy Perry.

Opener 'Mountain Made Of Stone' builds slowly on the back of Johanna (Jonsu) Salomaa's unassuming vocals until the rest of the band gets fully involved. 'Goodbye To Berlin' bounces along with a catchy beat whilst 'Run Run' could be considered a ballad and features some nice orchestral backing. The use of strings actually features prominently throughout the album and enhances the sound beyond the usual clichéd Pop song structures, 'Hush Now Baby' being the best example. The throbbing bass line and stabbing guitar riff act as the basis for the incessant 'A Kid In The Playground' and is a personal favourite towards the end of the album. In contrast, closing track 'War Child' is hypnotically atmospheric and brings things to quite a poignant end, the vocals having a delicate quality that suits the music perfectly.

If several of the songs on 'Shine' ('Here and Now' and 'Behind The Walls' especially) were to be placed in the hands of X-Factor and given an alternative treatment I'm sure they would be able to achieve great success. They have a strong commercial quality and avoid many of the clichés found amongst songs making it regularly into the charts. Unfortunately I think the British media is far too narrow-minded to consider anything on 'Shine' radio or TV worthy. The Scandinavian market certainly, and to some extent the market of mainland Europe, are far more receptive and appreciative of music, regardless of style or genre, so that is where the Indica's future will always lie.

I consider the 'Shine' material to be of a higher standard to that from 'A Way Away' but due to the lack of punch or balls, I still can't imagine too many Fireworks scribes becoming excited by this. No epic, overblown or Gothic related workouts and the whole album of eleven tracks clocks in at less than forty minutes meaning the impact is pretty much immediate. With five good-looking girls and a set of catchy songs, what's not to like?
