The European Trad Metal scene love 'em to death and 'Triumph And Power' will only confirm that status.

A classic Power trio based in the Swedish capital Stockholm, traditional riff merchants Grand Magus have been peddling their own deliciously caustic brand of molten Metal angst since the mid 90s when vocalist/guitarist Janne 'JB' Christofferson first hooked up with bassist Mats 'Fox' Skinner. They've had a couple of different drummers over the course of their six album tenure, but that core song-writing nucleus has remained rock solid pretty much since day one.

Follow up to 2012's well received 'The Hunt' opus, their seventh studio album 'Triumph And Power' is about to hit the streets with something of a bang. If you still haven't imbibed the delights of GM thus far, theirs is an unashamedly old school brand of Melodic Metal which at times borders on Doom – imagine a less cartoon style Manowar mixed in with some Sabbath, shades (sorry couldn't resist that!) of Deep Purple and the odd nod towards the likes of Tad Morose and Swedish Metal pioneers Heavy Load (remember them?)

Whilst not exactly traditional Doom in a Candlemass sense, their material tends towards slower to mid paced tracks for the most part – although that said, the rumbling 'Dominator' and frisky 'The Naked And The Dead' both motor at bit (for them at any rate); crunching riffs, precise solos and anguished vocals their stock in trade. In many respects 'Triumph...' picks up where its aforementioned predecessor left off, although this time around the melodies on tracks such as 'On Hooves Of Gold', 'Steel Versus Steel' and 'Triumph And Power' are that little more pronounced. Add to that a touch more variety in mood and tempo – I love the mini epic 'The Hammer Will Bite' that closes the album – along with a liberal sprinkling of Norse mythology in their lyrics and Viking Metal has a new champion in the making.

Grand Magus purists may argue that this slightly more accessible direction is a bit of a sell-out compared to earlier albums such as 'Iron Will' and 'Monument', but the eternal optimist in me prefers to see it as the band simply growing and flexing their muscles as writers. One thing's for sure, the European Trad Metal scene love 'em to death and 'Triumph And Power' will only confirm that status ... go on, treat yourself!
