LC fans will think it is excellent

When this arrived, I thought I wasn't going to like it but the more I listened the more I began to enjoy what I heard. I do have to say that this was a very difficult album to review as I would listen to tracks on one day and feel one way, then listen on another day and have a different opinion. I first came across Lacuna Coil years ago, and found them an amalgam of Metal, Progressive with a touch of Pop. Their last album, 'Dark Adrenalin,' seemed to have lost the Prog/Pop slant, coming over as a more straightforward Metal album, and to my ears it was a little flat.

'Broken Crown Halo' is probably more consistent, but there is nothing really new here. Opener 'Nothing Stands In Our Way,' is a heavy mid-tempo track with Cristina Scabbia singing her little socks off, hitting the higher ranges with no problem. 'Hostage To The Light' is a track that my ears were immediately attracted to with its really nice melodic chorus where Scabbia again demonstrates her vocal power. In contrast, she starts in the lower register on 'Victims,' then lifts it slightly before Andrea Ferro takes over for the chorus. There is even a bit of 'rap', which probably contradicts my view of "nothing new", but Within Temptation have just done this recently and to a bigger degree. 'Die & Rise' starts with a touch of electronica and a really strong guitar riff and keeps that momentum throughout; it's arguably the heaviest track too. 'I Forgive (But I Won't Forget Your Name)' is a strong song with a very memorable chorus and is just the kind of thing you would expect to hear from LC. 'Cybersleep' for me is the weakest song here today, but probably on another day I will like it a lot more. 'In The End I Feel Alive' is one to get your head down and shake to at the beginning (if you are still fit enough to do that) but then it sort of just loses its momentum with an extended orchestral ending. Final track 'One Cold Day' sounds quite majestic at the beginning but overall it's a bit of a puzzler because it's not quite a ballad, but it's also not far off.

So that is the highlights and lesser moments of LC's latest and as I say, it was quite a difficult one to get my head around. Maybe it's just me and LC fans will think it is excellent, and probably it is. But maybe, just maybe, it sounds a bit like previous Lacuna Coil albums, and what they need in the future is to be a little more adventurous. Maybe!
