I got a small degree of pleasure from listening to 'Missing In Action'

"Missing Persons were a household name in the 80s". "One of the most talked about comeback records of the year". These are just two statements forming part of the press-release accompanying this album; very bold statements indeed. The cover actually states that the band is Missing Persons featuring Dale Bozzio and this is the first new studio album in over twenty-five years. In fact 'Missing...' is better treated as a Billy Sherwood album (he is responsible for all the instrumentation as well as writing 90% of the material), with Bozzio on vocals, as there is no involvement from any other former members associated with the MP name. Warren Cuccurullo's absence raises eyebrows the most as he was still touring as part of the band just two or three years ago (with Bozzio) yet is missing from these recordings.

The material and vibe has a strong 1980s feel and is certainly more Electro Pop than Rock. 'Do Or Die', 'Hello, Hello' and 'Walk Into The Sun' all have good energy and a bouncy song structure and Bozzio's vocals seem to have changed very little during the last twenty-five years. Some songs, 'The More We Love' especially, would have fitted perfectly on a soundtrack from one of those cheesy Romantic Comedy movies we all remember so well from a lot of people's favourite decade. But their relevance in the 21st Century will depend on your affinity for, what I consider to be, dated, unimaginative and repetitive hooks and melodies. The songs are exceedingly computerized and the keyboards and programming dominate the sound. That was always a signature feature of MP music so if you are a traditionalist with a love of guitars, bass and drums then I've a feeling 'Missing...' will do absolutely nothing for you. The bonus tracks include an acoustic version of one of the band's better known songs, 'Walking In L.A.' and a radio remix of 'Hello, Hello' which is straight out of Saturday Night Fever!

The bottom line is... did we really need another Missing Persons record in 2014? Was the band that good all those years ago or did they just come to everyone's attention thanks to MTV and Bozzio's image and questionable fashion decisions? The Rock/Metal scene is certainly not starved of leading ladies at the moment and nearly all have better voices. Admittedly despite all the negativities, I got a small degree of pleasure from listening to 'Missing In Action' for the purpose of this review but I'm not sure just how often I will be returning to it in the future. They did not set my musical world on fire thirty years ago and that I'm afraid is still the case in 2014.
