Beautifully written, performed and arranged

After the band's last album 'Cheat The Gallows' came out in 2008, and they toured it to death, Big Elf took what band leader Damon Fox calls a "spontaneous hiatus", or in other words they ceased to be. Fox then worried and wondered what was to become of BE and it's musical legacy. Thankfully a friendship forged whilst on tour with (still at that time) Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, saw Portnoy telling Fox not to give up and to keep on writing his BE music. This encouragement has now at long last come to fruition with a newly reformed band releasing their brand new album entitled 'Into The Maelstrom'.

The new album sees Portnoy (now occupying the drum stool) joining with the band to help record a CD filled with the weird, odd, strange and eclectic music with lyrics by Fox. This weirdness can be heard in every guitar lick, drum fill, bass line and keyboard run that is to be found on '...Maelstrom' which is what makes this one of the most intriguing and interesting albums you'll hear in 2014.

If you haven't heard any of this band's music before then prepare yourself for what can only be described as a barrage of sound. An onslaught that draws influences from such diverse acts as the Beatles, Black Sabbath, Yes, King Crimson and various Pop/Rock bands. Yet this "Maelstrom" (sorry) of diversity, when pulled together by Fox's lyrical storytelling, becomes a breathtaking ride into a world that few other bands have tried to enter and have failed in their attempts if they have tried to do so. The themes of loss, pain, deep emotion and Fox's personal worries about how mankind might finally end up destroying itself through its own short-sightedness are all explored here through songs that are both enigmatic and beautiful in their darkness. 'Incredible Time Machine', 'Hypersleep', 'Alien Frequency', 'The Professor & The Madman', the mystic and haunting 'Mr. Harry McQuhae' and the epic title track 'Into The Maelstrom' have after continued plays, set up home in my subconscious and I found myself humming along to their strange melodies as they popped up unexpectedly in my mind during the day.

Beautifully written, performed and arranged with a stellar production 'Into The Maelstrom' won't be to everyone's tastes but please give this wonderful album a try because it will probably be (even if you don't like it) one of the seminal musical listening experiences of your life.
