An album that indicates an interesting change of direction.

RPWL don't do things by halves. Their previous album, 'Beyond Man And Time' was based on the thoughts of Nietzsche; this one tackles the topic of the ultimate liberation of the spirit. Apparently, there's a question; is modern man, being the evolutionary creature he is, ready for absolute freedom? To explore the subject the band's built an entire back story in which they seek to give the world access to a liberation drug. This incurs the wrath of all religions thus forcing the band underground as they are "wanted" men. Pretty deep, right?

Musically my immediate impressions were that here is a rather different beast to the RPWL we've witnessed to date. Hitherto their style has generally been mid-paced not unlike Pink Floyd, where things develop slowly and rarely get out of second or third gear. Here things have changed; my notes reference some rather different influences not least the Prog Metal brigade such as Dream Theater. To me this is a much heavier RPWL then on any of their previous outings.
Yogi Lang's vocals are still heavily accented which may be an issue for some but if there's any liberation going on it has to be the freeing up of guitarist Kalle Wallner to play more riffs, which he does with considerable relish.

The album opens with the instrumental 'Revelation' the start of which puts me in mind of Kraftwerk until a crunching Metal guitar explodes onto the scene and takes matters off in another direction. The piece moves through several phases, the mellower mid section is more akin to the RPWL style we've come to know.

'Swords And Guns' features wonderful grumbling bass from Werner Taus and we almost get some Death Metal growling early on, but this doesn't last long. There's a catchy chorus and the synth solo from either Lang or Markus Jehle that is a delight. Overtones of Phil Collins' 'In the Air Tonight' are evident on the intro to 'A Clear Cut Line' due to the use of a drum machine, while the title track is in more familiar territory - it's a straight forward Melodic Rock song with a catchy chorus.
Elsewhere 'Hide And Seek' is driven by an acoustic guitar bringing the Floyd comparison to mind while 'Disbelief' is Bluesy with Wallner to the fore; although the sung/spoken vocals on the verses are an acquired taste. 'Misguided Thought' is a return to form and 'Perfect Day' is a jaunty number. 'The Attack' is the longest track and probably the heaviest while the acoustic 'A New Dawn' makes me think of Donovan at times. It's a lovely conclusion to an album that indicates an interesting change of direction.
