Crystal Tears roar with a similar throttle-wide Power Metal fury

While it may not be known as the hotbed of all things Metal, there's no denying that Greece is home to some of the most fanatical Metalheads anywhere in the world. Recent years have also seen a growth in the export of Greek Metal to the rest of Europe, with notable success coming the way of the likes of Firewind and Wardrum.

Therefore it should come as little surprise that Thessaloniki's Crystal Tears roar with a similar throttle-wide Power Metal fury; guitars flailing, drums rattling, vocals snarling and yes, on occasion, all out growling. The man doing the voice adaptations is a certain Søren Nico Adamsen, once of Inmoria and Artillery (he actually replaced Ian Parry of Consortium Project in this band) and while he brings a wealth of experience to CT, it is hard to escape the feeling that on occasion his preference for emotion over precision, actually hampers the straight up Power Metal on offer.

In one shape or form CT have been together now since the late nineties, offering up a debut album ('Choirs Of Immortal') in 2006 and the Parry fronted 'Generation X' emerging four years later. 'Hellmade' may not have quickened the work rate, but it does find a band now tied with Massacre Records and they certainly know how to tick all the Power Metal boxes. In a way that's a good thing, for 'Hellmade' is solid, brash and brutal yet melodic. However when weighed up against how easy it is to make comparisons with just about any other European Power Metal act out there, then the issue isn't so much about style but an ability to show enough initiative to stand out in this incredibly crowded pack.

Tracks like 'The Devil Inside', 'Destination Zero' or 'Rock 'N' Growl' all possess enough crunch, force and flash to grab the attention and repeat listens do reveal nuances initially lost in 'Resurrection Suicide' and 'Under Your Skin'. However the formulaic nature of these and the other tracks (and a ho-hum cover of the Midnight Oil classic 'Beds Are Burning'), leave a decidedly good, but not great impression and while I can't criticise much on 'Hellmade', neither can I truly implore you to rush out and buy it.
