Raw and real, 'Contact' deserves a hearing.

Norwegian Alien Ken (Egeland) has produced his first solo album 'Contact' after previously being a part of bands K(Nine) and Moth Circus. Describing his music as 'Alien Coffin Rock', it incorporates an eclectic mix of styles and influences under the Heavy Metal/Rock banner. Opening track 'Content Is King' is a straight up Hard Rock anthem with Ken's throaty vocals and Bluesy feel reminding me of Y&T or Tesla. But we're immediately off on a different track with 'Wrath Of Noro', a much heavier Industrial sound which surfaces throughout the album, with a nod towards Rammstein territory. 'Cleanse My Claws' was the first single from the album and again is full of heavy riffing and raw aggressive vocals.

Throughout the range and diversity on offer there is an undeniable energy and enthusiasm in both Egeland's vocals and guitar work. Raucous and bordering on outright shouting, the vocals at times could be reined in a bit, but there's no getting away from the passion that comes across. Highlight of the album is probably 'Glitter Rambo', a mix of vocal styles fighting for prominence in a hard rocking slab of pure Metal.

Ken certainly has his own distinctive style with spoken word sections in several songs and a myriad of influences. 'Mirrored' is the slower track, bringing the pace down – until the chorus and guitars kick in and it just blows away again. No matter what you may think of 'Contact' it's full of vibe and feeling that convinces you that it was made with a huge smile on Alien Ken's face, which then translates to the listener.

I'm really not sure whether I actually like the music itself that is on offer particularly, but I do enjoy listening to it. It's raw and it's real. To get that exuberance into an album is a real achievement in itself and 'Contact' deserves a hearing for that alone. And you never then know where an Alien will take you too.
