One track aside this is an excellent album.

There's an English expression derived from a cartoon published in Punch magazine during the mid 1800s which goes "like the Curate's egg, good in parts" which was a phrase that came to mind when I reached a certain point in this album. When it's good it's very good indeed however the bad bits are difficult to stomach, even for a fan like me.

The culprit is the track 'Do U Tango?' which is the kind of noodling nonsense non-Prog fans will use, quite reasonably and with no argument from me, as ammunition in their argument that the genre is pretentious, self-indulgent, tedious and not worthy of their attention. It's freeform, Jazzy, tuneless, pointless and an exercise in showing off. These guys are consummate musicians and prove it across the album so why they have to resort to this type of clamour is baffling. Needless to say I've deleted the offending track from my iPod and I can't imagine listening to it again, ever.

Having got that off my chest let me tell you about the positives which is pretty much everything else on the album as one would expect from a band featuring the innate talent of the ubiquitous Göran Edman (vocals), Jonas Reingold (bass), Lalle Larsson (keys), Nils Eriksen (keys & vocals), Morgan Ågren (drums) and Krister Jonsson (guitars).

Edman will be a name familiar to readers of this magazine thanks to his contributions to many albums across a variety of Rock genres. He's one of those guys who can turn his voice to many styles and here he is on spectacular form with vocals of the highest quality and importantly, melody. The vocal tracks are simply splendid and I defy even the staunchest non-Prog person not to admit that the songs ooze hooks, melodies and themes that tick all the boxes.

Most of the tracks, which are generally lengthy, ebb, flow and meander (in a good way) through splendid themes with Edman bringing the lyrics to life, not least on the poignant, melancholy but ultimately beautiful 'Eternally' which was written by Reingold for his parents who lost their lives in a road accident. By contrast 'Turn It Up' borders on the Toto-esque with its bouncy refrain and chorus.

If I had to pick a favourite track it would be the twenty minute epic 'Send A Message From The Heart' which sweeps through many phases and tempos but remains wonderfully melodic throughout. The instrumental opening is a delight and Edman's vocals are exquisite.

They choose to close with a cover but an unusual one, 'Undertow' by Genesis, which is well executed.

One track aside this is an excellent album.
