It's not that there’s anything specifically bad or hard to listen to here, it’s just bland and nondescript.

Apparently Heavy Honey are the latest band to come out of the hot and exciting Vegas scene. Not something that I’m particularly in tune with and on this offering – that’s fine by me. It’s not that there’s anything specifically bad or hard to listen to here, it’s just bland and nondescript. Their main man is singer and songwriter London Mace who founded the band several years ago, although ‘Crushing Symphony’ is their debut album.

‘Soul Selling (Mr Kane Mix)’ and ‘Superlove’ kick off the album; both were singles with videos that can be found on YouTube. Both tracks start quietly, picking out a rhythm and building to the point where you expect the band to come crashing in, but it’s with a bit of a whimper rather than with any real power. There’s still undoubtedly a place in Rock music for this dark, pounding feel - a throwback to the Grunge sound of the nineties, but the fire and passion of back then is missing. ‘Falling’ is a bit more lively with a hint of Rock and Roll about it, but it’s not until track six, ‘On My Way’, that I feel any real energy from the band with a track from the Alice Cooper Garage style songbook.

‘My FU Smile’ is a faster by comparison Punk Rocker but the distorted vocals and guitar parts only succeed in giving it a demo feel. ‘Overkill’ and ‘My Hate’ end the albums eleven tracks, a couple of heavy Doom laden dirges that again seem to lack any great focus. As I’m sure you can tell HH haven’t exactly provided any sort of inspiration for me here. If you like dark brooding Grunge influenced Rock, give the singles a listen before you buy, but I can’t say there’s much to get excited about.

The best part of this album was the accompanying press release that claims HH have “emotionally charged music and catchy melodies capable of changing the world” and then proceeds to bracket them as being able to make the same impact as Bruce Springsteen and The Beatles. At least it shows that someone in the Heavy Honey camp has a sense of humour.
