If you fancy something a little different, give them a shot. I was very pleasantly surprised.

Enjoying massive success in their native South Africa, The Parlotones can boast multi-platinum sales along with comparisons to bands like Coldplay and Radiohead. Initially put off by that comparison, this, my first taste of their work, proved to be much more enjoyable than I first imagined. The band is far more upbeat than the comparisons on the press release suggest. They actually embrace a massive variety of styles which gives a nod to dozens of bands, but at the same time provides TP with a sound all of their own.

‘Sleepwalking’ sets the group’s taste for variety out, with a verse that has a Pet Shop Boys vibe and a contemporary backing before the guitars kick in for an Indie Rock chorus. There is even a little Rap bridge and an anthemic “whoa whoa” sing-along section all wrapped up in a three and a half minute gem. The thought provoking ‘Slow Assassination’ bounces along with a kind of 1980s Electronica feel, fused with a Modern Rock chorus, while ‘Shake It Up’ does just that with a gentle intro before the band explode into a driving Rocker with parping keyboard stabs. The title track is an uplifting powerhouse flag-waver of a song, which I imagine would work very well in the stadium shows the band plays back at home.

‘Sympathise With The Cost’ shows yet another side to the band, being a glorious acoustic ballad with a lush string section as accompaniment, rivaled only by the delightful ‘Never Stand Alone’. The synths of ‘Spellbound’ have a Depeche Mode vibe about them while ‘Song Of Whales’ is based around a catchy guitar riff. This eclectic material makes the band hard to describe, but the one core element running throughout is catchy melodies. On paper I shouldn’t like it, but it’s very listenable indeed.

I’d put this album at the fringe of the sort of stuff I’d normally review, but I can’t deny it’s good. With all these styles, you could easily categorise The Parlotone’s sound as Electronica, Rock or Pop, and none of them would be wrong. If you fancy something a little different, give them a shot. I was very pleasantly surprised.
