It’s all so... usual.

The Jesuits apparently said “give me the child for the first seven years and I’ll give you the man”. If this Sydney quartet was with you for seven days you’d be ready to follow anyone anywhere just to make it stop. They cite their influences as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Muse, Led Zepplin, Incubus, Pink Floyd and throw in film composer Hans Zimmer just “cos making yourself look well travelled is like, you know, tote amazeballs”. This is a game of two halves; one called ho... one called hum.

This is Indie stuff; the stuff that Wild Beasts do. Yes, Wild Beasts or Warpaint or Everything Everything; okay, they’re not as bad as, say, Damon Albarn (God, that’s poor...). Anyway, this has glacial guitars, whining vocals and some Coldplay “in a moment this will break into a big sound... ah there it is... oh” sections. This makes it all rather unnecessary.

There’s airy piano that’s comparable to Chris Martin’s stuff and a de-rigour 1980s bass barrages in ‘Pulse’ and a Nu Metal off the peg riff in ‘Vanity’ even though it has a slightly Funky middle; ‘Tear You Hate Apart’ even has a Industro-lite beat with a simple piano. It is not all bad news, sometimes they try to be a little Proggy; that’ll be the Pink Floyd and Muse influence in ‘Afraid To Die’ then, stabbing synth strings aplenty adding to the sweeping quality - ah, that’ll be the Zimmer connection (good name for a 1960s spy film, that) and adds the groove that’s missing elsewhere. Joseph de la Hoyde’s twangy solo in ‘Sailing Stones’ also makes you look twice.

This may be just what is needed to get onto the NME’s playlist, but it’s all so... usual. Some orders of Monks observe a vow of silence... if only.
