It's a nicely packaged album too and overall is a very worthy addition to any Modern Prog collection.

'Perfect Beings' is an interesting and thoughtful debut album from the U.S. based Progressive Rock outfit that goes by the same name. The brainchild of Moth Vellum founder Johannes Luley, both band and album appear to have been lovingly and patiently created, with the end product fully justifying the time and care taken.

On a mission to give "Traditional Prog Rock" a modern make over, '...Beings' is loosely based on Suhail Rafidi's novel 'Tj And Tosc'. The "concept" allows the band to explore themes of transformation, self-identity, technology and love in a post-apocalyptic world. That might make it sound like a heavy listen, though the reality is that musically it is anything but. I played it first while driving through the rolling hills and mountains of North Wales and it somehow seemed just right for the journey. Indeed, the at times Folky, dreamy soundscape that is 'Walkabout' (one of the album's stand-out tracks) features birds singing, and led to my travelling companion describing '...Beings' as "an outdoor album"; one that benefits from a gentle breeze and an open landscape.

'Beings' has been written and composed by guitarist Luley and vocalist Ryan Hurtgen with the rest of the band completed by Bruce Dickinson's drummer Dicki Fliszar, keyboardist Jesse Nason, and bassist Chris Tristram. The latter came to Luley's attention after posting a video of himself playing along to Yes' 'Roundabout' online which gained nearly a hundred thousand views. They sound like a tight and complementary bunch.

The music is accessible and easy on the ear throughout and has plenty of joyful and inventive moments – from the upbeat and quirky 'Helicopter' and the grand classical keyboards and striking bass lines of 'Removal Of The Identity Chip' to the compelling melodies of 'Program Kid' and the classical guitar and sudden time changes of 'One Of Your Kind'.

It's a nicely packaged album too and overall is a very worthy addition to any Modern Prog collection. To paraphrase my aforementioned travelling companion, the sonic terrain may initially sound familiar, but this is an album that quickly moves well beyond its post code.
